The Routine You’ll Actually Keep

On skinimalism — and why the best routine is the one that survives your actual life.

For years, skincare has been sold to us as a project. A cleanser. A toner. A serum. Another serum. Eye cream. Treatment. Moisturiser.

I’ve bought those kits too — five steps, six steps, sometimes more. And buying the routine always felt strangely productive, as if I’d taken a step toward better skin simply by bringing the box home.

Then life happened. I got tired and busy, I travelled, I stayed up too late, and plenty of nights I just couldn’t be bothered. Washing my face at night has always lived in one of my non-negotiable boxes. Everything beyond it had to fight for survival — and most of it lost.

Maybe those routines would have transformed my skin if I’d followed them religiously. I’ll never know. What I do know is this.

A routine only has value if it survives your actual life.

That’s what skinimalism means to me. Not owning less for the sake of owning less. Not rejecting serums, actives or treatment products. Just questioning the idea that more skincare automatically means better skincare.

Because more products also mean more variables. More ingredients, more layering, more decisions. More chances to irritate your skin, and more opportunities to quietly stop doing the routine altogether. Sometimes more simply means more.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become much more comfortable asking a small, unfashionable question: do I actually need this?

My routine is simpler now than it’s been in years. I cleanse. I exfoliate occasionally. I moisturise. That’s largely it — and my skin is happier for it.

Which doesn’t prove anyone else needs the same routine. Skin changes. Needs change. Specific concerns may well need specific products. But my starting question has changed. I used to ask what else I should add.

Now I ask: what does my skin actually need?

That feels like the real point. It isn’t about neglect. It’s about enough.

Enough cleansing. Enough nourishment.
Enough useful ingredients. Enough consistency.

Because the best routine isn’t the one that looks most impressive lined up on the bathroom shelf.

It’s the one you still do when you’re tired.

Know what your skin needs. Give it that. Stop there.
